Adverse Effects of Light and Heat on Beer

October 4, 2010

“Can a beer fridge that has got a white fluro tube in it, make the beer in glass go off?” The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that there are three big things that can alter the taste of beer, 1. Heat, 2. Light, 3. Time There was a recent article in the 10th Issue of Beer and Brewer Magazine (Spring 2009) which discussed the science behind the effects of light in greater detail. We have included snippets of the article in the information below. How does heat effect beer? There is a good reason why brewers recommend beer is stored in a cool place. Heat can have a seriously adverse affect on beer and even a short stint in a really...

Belgian Beers

October 2, 2010

If you like beer, then Belgian beers should draw you to visit this little country. The Visit Belgium website says there are over 450 different varieties of beer. Beer is more than just a drink here… this country cultivates beer connoisseurs. It’s true… Belgians take their beer seriously. Many of the beers have specific beer glasses in which that beer, and only that beer, may be served. Just like some wine glasses, each glass is made to enhance the flavor of the beer it is designed for. Certain beers may be paired with food, just like wines are, and some beers are aged for years in their bottle. Almost all Belgian beers are “conditioned” in the bottle not in kegs, so it will be...

Belly Fat in Men, May not be from Beer

September 30, 2010

Belly fat in men is becoming so common that we don’t think twice about seeing a basket ball-sized stomach hanging over a man’s belt. The good news, according to the Mayo Clinic, is that when people move more and eat less, belly fat is the first kind of fat to go. What we have to understand is that how to lose belly fat is more about a lifestyle change then just a quick fix. Belly fat is the most stubborn of all fats because it is deeply entrenched. New research has found that excess abdominal fat in particular puts us at even more risk for heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, as well as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Not surprisingly, how big around you...

10 Drinks Guaranteed to be the Picks of the Party

September 13, 2010

A good quality lager and beer: There’s no excuse for just buying the cheapest you can, because the chances are that the price will be reflected in the lack of taste. So go for choices which people will know, but might not ordinarily try themselves. Two to try – Staropramen Czech lager, Black Sheep ale. Red and white wine: It’s no longer acceptable to just think of wine as an ingredient for your party punch, meaning that the cheapest will do. The wine drinkers at your party won’t thank you if you don’t give at least a little thought to what they might like. By the same token, there’s no need to break the bank to find a quality wine which they’ll appreciate. Two...

Is it Whiskey or Whisky?

September 12, 2010

When discussing whisky the first thing that needs to be know is that there are two legitimate spellings. The Scotts and Canadians spell whisky without the “e”, while the Irish and Americans spell it with an “e” as in whiskey. This should be the first indication that the world of whisky is a very complicated one and has many regional differences in taste and production. This is part of what makes whisky such an interesting and enjoyable spirit. Historically it is believed that the Irish were the first to make whiskey, however the Scotts have also laid claim to being the first whisky producers. The Irish used the term “uisce beatha” (“Water of Life” in Gaelic) to describe whiskey, so it must have been...

Jack Daniel’s – The Great American Whiskey

September 11, 2010

The Jack Daniel’s legend starts with the eponymous founder of the distillery, who allegedly owned his first distillery at the tender age of 13, having learned his skill at the knee of Dan Call – one of those moon shining preachers who pepper the history of American whiskey. Jack was a clever operator, but it’s hard to imagine that he envisaged his brand would one day become the most famous American whiskey of all. These days it’s Jimmy Bradford who wearing Jack’s shoes. The epitome of a Southern gentleman (unlike the short-tempered Jack, who died after kicking a safe in his office), he’s been looking after the whiskey for 32 years, which, he drawls laconically: ‘probably gives me some credibility to talk about distilling’....
